Reading the Bible this year?

January 5, 2010

Happy New Year to everyone.  I love the thought of a new year….it’s a breath of fresh air, a chance to start new, a chance to make goals and plans and reflect on the past year.  A chance to remember the journey God took you on last year and wait with anticipation and expectancy for the the journeys God will take you on this year.

One of the things I wanted to set a plan for this year is a reading plan for reading through the Bible.  Youversion.com has made this really simple.  They have compiled a list of a lot of the reading plans out there and have descriptions on their site.  If you visit the site, the first thing that pops up is a box prompting you to check out the reading plans.

The reading plan I tried to do last year was the Lifejournal.cc.  It is different from other plans because you’re supposed to journal everyday.  Before reading, pray and ask God to cause 1 verse to jump out at you and then journal about it.  It’s called the SOAP method.  S = Scripture…write out the Scripture; O = Observation….what is it that stands out to you in the verse; A = Application….what/how can you apply this to your life; P = Prayer…write out a prayer claiming the verse and believing that God can use the verse in your life.

It’s hard for me to sit, read and that’s it…I need a take-away, something to think about throughout the day…so this is my reading plan of choice for this year.  This may not work for you, but I encourage you to check out Youversion.com and find a plan that you can commit to.  Joshua 1:8 speaks of the promise of God concerning His Word:

Study this Book of Instruction continually.  Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it.  Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Hi Michelle: I stumbled on to your blog through Tasty Kitchen….I’m getting ready to make the banana bread that you rated a few days ago. I saw your review with your picture and thought to myself: I really need to upload a picture to my profile. I clicked on your name, and here I am. I’ve entered a few contests on other blogs, and maybe made a quick comment here or there, but this is the first time I’ve felt like I HAD to write the blogger a personal note. Your title for this date immediately caught my attention because I too am reading the bible this year. I have recently started a new chapter in my faith..or I think a more accurate statement would be I have recently returned to my faith. I am looking forward to checking out both of the sites you list and I really like the concept of SOAP. Thank you so much for sharing all of this. And just to add one more thing (which was the icing on the cake for why I should write) I too am a runner. Congrats on committing to one! Is it a first? I think 1/2 marathons are the PERFECT distance. They require training, but not the kind that takes over your life. Ok – off to the banana bread…….
