Psalm 128 – God’s Blessings
1 How joyful are those who fear the Lord —all who follow his ways!
2 You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be!
3 Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine, flourishing within your home. Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees as they sit around your table.
4 That is the Lord ‘s blessing for those who fear him.
5 May the Lord continually bless you from Zion. May you see Jerusalem prosper as long as you live.
6 May you live to enjoy your grandchildren. May Israel have peace!
Fear is a verb, in this case it means to have reverential awe. Those who have a reverential awe towards the Lord are said to be joyful….why – because there is a trust, a respect that His ways are best and His ways work. Other than being joyful, blessings from fearing the Lord are:
You will enjoy the fruits of your labor – You fear the Lord by doing everything (work included) as to the Lord, cheerfully, submitting to the authority placed over you, and you will enjoy the fruits of your labor.
Your wife will be like a fruitful grapevine – crops that don’t produce well are a bit of a disappointment but plants that are fruitful are enjoyable. As you’re leading your wife in the fear of the Lord, she will begin to flourish and grow and produce a harvest of her own. Being secure in the fact your husband fears the Lord and lives in His ways is freeing.
Your children will be like vigorous young olive trees – An olive tree grows the most in the first 2 years, during that time they are carefully pruned and staked.
“Stakes need to be strong enough to support the tree while the anchor roots are developing, and yet flexible enough to allow the tree to move in the wind.” -Santa Cruz Olive Tree Nursery
Living in the fear of the Lord, your children will grow like crazy and will be able to develop anchor roots which will be able to support them through life, but will also allow them to be flexible and not break in the storms of life.
These are the Lord’s blessing for those who fear Him.
Are you living in blessing, in reverential awe of the Lord?
