She’s So Much Like Me

December 23, 2009

This is a portal to the unknown….

My kids have found an adventure this week.  It’s only a little while after they wake up everyday this week I hear, “Can we go to the back backyard?”  There’s about 8 acres of woods behind our house that the kids have been exploring this week.  My daughter led the pack today…she was the 1st one to ask….and she’s also named it the Adventure Club.

This is their fort….

Kenly has asked me to chop down some random trees and brush and we used Riley’s army net to create the roof.  They have found such treasures as an old vaccuum, an old weed wacker, which Riley has transformed into his machete.  They’ve found an old bucket, dubbed the pee bucket, because the boys have peed in it.

I’ve only let them go a little ways into the woods, they have to stay behind our backyard and can only go about 100 feet into the woods.  I can see them going too far and ending up at the busiest intersection at Monkey Junction.  They wanted to go farther so they asked if I would come along….I said SURE!!

I Love exploring in the woods.  That’s what I did the majority of my time growing up, when I wasn’t climbing trees, me and my brother were going through the woods…we weren’t concerned about getting lost, or someone taking us, this was before we knew ticks carried lymes disease.  The endless acres behind our house in Fairview, Tennessee were our playground.  And the fact that my kids….my daughter wants to explore…makes my heart sing!!!  Here’s their playground:

My fearless explorers

What do your kids do that take you back to your childhood and make you smile?

This truly takes me back to my childhood, michelle! i had three brothers who tormented me and we always had a woods behind our house. we made forts, rope swings, and trails, and i loved it when my kids did the same. we didn’t worry about anyone taking you. times were different and sad to say much safer then. i was always dirty like my brothers and quite the tomboy. Loved your blog. Brought back memories for me and also memories of my kids taking hikes to the resevoir behind our house in rolling knolls. thanks for the stroll down memory lane!!

Our backyard in Rolling Knolls was the BEST! Ask Jeff about it sometime. I’m sure you’ve heard the stories. From the forts, to the putt-putt golf course, to the endless trails leading to the reservoir, it had to be the best place to grow up!

This was lovely – reminds me of my childhood in the woods and creek by my home. My kids playground is now the beach since we’re here but my heart sings when I see them sitting quietly and reading. If they’d just do it in the woods, it would be perfect!
